Two weeks ago Dumbarton were dishing out that lesson to St Mirren. At Inverness, they had to learn it all over again.

Carl Tremarco's goal for the home side on 33 minutes proved to be the only goal of a game which you could not accuse of being a classic.

Sons worked hard from first minute to last, but were lacking in spark. Where they could easily have put three or four past St Mirren, in this game they found goals, or anything resembling one, hard to come by.

Perhaps the afternoon was best summed up on the hour mark when Tom Walsh sent over a low ball from the left. All it needed was a white sock at full stretch to finish from a yard out. There wasn't one.

It was a closely and bravely fought 90 minutes where there were positives to take. But this was the latest lesson in the importance of cutting edge.

If you were a neutral, you'd probably deem this game to have started well enough. John Baird shot narrowly past for Inverness before Walsh made an early statement of intent.

He surprised several people by going for goal from a narrow angle, but his fierce shot was turned over.

After Brad McKay's overhead kick just missed the bar, Walsh and Greg Morrison were off target with further chances.

Something was bound to go on target sooner or later. Unfortunately for Dumbarton, it was Tremarco's header when a free kick was delivered into the area from a central position.

Early in the second half, Scott Gallacher was the busier goalkeeper. Having rushed back from out of his goal to save Liam Polworth's lob from distance, he then denied Connor Bell in fine fashion.

Then, after Walsh's delivery which had no takers, it was a case of working hard, and dominating possession, but little end product.

The closest Sons got was when David Wilson played Walsh through with five minutes left. His angled shot was just the wrong side of the post.

So the long, dark journey down the A9 was not one of celebration. But other days will be, with more ruthlessness.
