THERE are times when your destiny is out of your own hands.

When your fate hinges on things you can't control.

This was one of those days.

On another afternoon Dumbarton would have won this game against Morton - with more goals than the Lee Kilday own goal they had to show for their efforts.

Instead they had to settle for a draw, courtesy of Kudus Oyenuga's equaliser for the home side and occasions when fortune did not favour them.

They say that breaks even themselves out over time. Some would even claim that, having had four penalties awarded in their last three games before this one, Dumbarton had had their share of them.

But neither such claim made events at Cappielow any easier to accept or understand.

The game, although compulsive viewing, was slow to get going in terms of chances. Indeed, the first fell to ex-Sons midfielder Jamie Lindsay, whose 26th minute shot missed the target.

Within a minute Sons were ahead when Robert Thomson connected with Ryan Stevenson's cross. After pinball in the six yard box, the ball found the net with the last touch seeming to belong to Kilday.

The visitors were looking confident and soon afterwards Gregor Buchanan's header from another Stevenson assist was deflected over.

But while Sons were also in their stride in the early second half, it was to be one long period of frustration.

On 59 minutes Robert Thomson looked to have a convincing case for a penalty when his heels were clipped in the area.

But neither the referee nor his assistant, the latter in an excellent position to view the incident, was moved.

And three minutes later events continued against Sons' favour, starting when Alan Martin kept the ball in play only for a corner to be awarded.

The set piece was only half cleared by Sons, and Oyenuga, often a threat to them during his Cowdenbeath days in season 2014/15, made no mistake in converting Ricki Lamie's cross.

He could have scored again soon after when Gary Oliver rolled him in, but shot wide. Then Grant Gallagher headed against the bar - his own one, in trying to clear Scott Tiffoney's cross. The lingering danger was dealt with.

Although struggling to create chances, Sons were by no means out of it. But when they did create an opportunity, there was more frustration.

After Robert Thomson won a header against home keeper Derek Gaston, his namesake Joe thrashed home a volley from the edge of the area for what looked like being the winner.

It took several seconds to establish that the goal had been disallowed. It has taken much longer to work out why. Explanations have ranged from a foul on the keeper to offside.

Morton boss Jim Duffy later told the press that he felt there was no infringement and that the goal was good.

As it was, Oyenuga could have won it for Morton, but shot wide from six yards when well placed.

So what was that they say about breaks?
